Subsequently, he attended the Albany Medical College in upstate New York, where he earned his M.D. in 1986. During his time at Albany, his classmates elected him as the student who best represented the characteristics of a physician.
After completing his general surgery internship and residency in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at the Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, Dr. Stevens served for 12 years in the Navy. His naval career included attending both the Navy submarine and diving schools, working at the Naval Medical Research Institute’s experimental diving unit, and serving as a staff surgeon and ultimately department head of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at the Naval Hospital in Great Lakes, IL. His distinguished service earned him the Navy Commendation Medal, three Navy Achievement Medals, and a Navy-wide resident research award.
Dr. Stevens’ expertise in his field is further demonstrated by his involvement as a member of the credentialing committee of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery from 2005 to 2008. He has authored more than 40 articles on facial plastic and head and neck surgery, as well as diving medicine.
