At just six years old, Dr. Helft survived a near-fatal car accident and experienced firsthand the difference compassionate medical care can make during an incredibly difficult time. Rather than allowing the experience to simply become a part of his past, it became a source of purpose. He wanted to give other children the same sense of care, reassurance, and hope that had made such an impression on him.
Born and raised in New York, Dr. Helft moved to New Orleans in 1992, where his academic journey in medicine began to take shape. He earned a Master’s Degree in Public Health and Tropical Medicine from Tulane University before receiving his medical degree from Louisiana State University in Shreveport in 1998. He completed his pediatric residency at LSU in New Orleans in 2001, beginning a career dedicated to the health and wellbeing of children.
After beginning his career in Titusville, Dr. Helft moved to Melbourne in 2003 and opened his own practice the following year. His vision continued to grow, and in 2005 he created a custom-designed, kid-friendly office that would become the home of Pediatric Wizards. From its playful atmosphere to its thoughtful details, the space was designed with an important goal in mind: helping children feel comfortable and at ease when visiting the doctor.
That attention to the emotional side of medicine comes naturally to Dr. Helft. Having experienced significant hardship himself, including losing his mother at the age of 13, he understands that children and families sometimes need more than medical answers. They also need someone who will listen, offer reassurance, and meet them with empathy.
Today, Dr. Helft brings that perspective to his work as a Board-Certified pediatrician and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. In addition to caring for patients at Pediatric Wizards, he serves as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine and maintains hospital privileges at Holmes Regional Medical Center.
While his professional accomplishments reflect years of dedication to pediatrics, those who know Dr. Helft see the person behind the white coat. Outside the office, Dr. Helft enjoys spending time with his family, dogs, and even one very unexpected four-legged family member: a dragon. His playful spirit, personal experiences, and genuine compassion continue to shape the welcoming environment he has created at Pediatric Wizards, where helping children feel comfortable and cared for is at the heart of the experience.
